Scrabo Tower will reopen this Friday

By Staff Reporter

Scrabo Tower in Newtownards will reopen on Friday, it has been announced.

The building closed its doors to the public in 2014 over health and safety fears, but following repairs and a successful trial last year the monument had been due to open last Friday.

However, the Department for Communities announced on Twitter beforehand that "due to unforeseen circumstances" the landmark would not open as planned. Yesterday, the department said the famous tower would reopen from July 7.

Built in 1857, Scrabo Tower is one of the most familiar sights in Co Down, and the surrounding Country Park attracts around 200,000 visitors each year.

"Following the completion of pre-opening works at Scrabo Tower, the Department for Communities is pleased to announce that this State Care Monument will be opened in partnership with the National Trust from Friday, 7 July, 2017," it said. The site will be open at weekends, Friday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, with last admission at 3.30pm. Entrance is £3 per adult, £2 for children and concessions.
