SDLP MLA 'disgusted and furious' after campaigner verbally abused while putting up party posters

A SDLP MLA has said he is “disgusted and furious” after a volunteer who was putting up posters for the party was verbally abused in Omagh.

Daniel McCrossan said an SDLP campaigner was was verbally abused and had his ladder thrown in a river in the Campsie Road area early on Sunday morning.

Police have cautioned a man for criminal damage following the incident.

The west Tyrone MLA, posting on social media, said: “I’m disgusted and furious that a member of my team, putting up posters, was assaulted in Omagh last night.

"He was approached by three men, who then pushed him off the ladder when he was at the top of it.

“They then stole his ladders and fired them into the river strule.

“Thankfully, he is ok. If anyone witnessed this last night please come forward to police.

“Nothing and certainly no idiot will prevent me and my party representing the people of west Tyrone.”

A PSNI spokesman said: “At around 2.50am yesterday morning police in Omagh received a report that a male had been verbally abused in the Campsie Road area by three men.

"A ladder was also taken from the male and dumped it in the Strule river.

“A suspect was identified by police and has been cautioned for criminal damage.”
