SDLP's John Boyle named as next Mayor of Derry
SDLP councillor John Boyle has been confirmed as the new Mayor of Derry and Strabane for 2018/19.
Councillor Boyle was named as the new Mayor following a selection convention in Derry on Thursday night.
He was selected by SDLP party members after going head-to-head with party colleague Shauna Cusack for the role.
Mr Boyle is currently Deputy Mayor of Derry and Strabane and will replace incumbent Sinn Fein Mayor Maoliosa McHugh.
He is expected to be appointed formally as Mayor at the beginning of June 2018.
Councillor Boyle, who has served on council for seven years, said he was delighted to be selected for the position.
“I’d like to thank all my colleagues and friends in the SDLP who have supported me, not just tonight but over the years in council," he said.
“In the SDLP council group we are team players – my role as Mayor will be to do the same, to be a team player. I want to work to ensure that the politics of division is rooted out of here. The politics of partnership and progress needs to be our focus. My ambition is to see a united people working together in harmony to achieve true reconciliation."
He said that his main priority is securing a City Deal for the North West.
“We need to take this city, this district, this country forward. We need to build a new future filled with opportunity and hope," he added.
“My priority will be to look for creative ways to bring jobs and investment here – and I’ll ensure we get a City Deal for the people of the North West.
“I won’t let the people of Derry and Strabane down, I’m looking forward to taking the reins.”
