The SDLP's candidate in Fermanagh-South Tyrone has said he is not worried that a senior party figure didn't know who he was.

Alex Attwood claimed on radio that the SDLP had not yet decided on who would take on Michelle Gildernew in the General Election on May 7.

In fact the SDLP announced on January 18 that John Coyle had been selected to stand.

Yesterday Mr Coyle dismissed the slip-up, saying he wasn't bothered by it.

"As long as the people of Fermanagh-South Tyrone know who I am, they are the people I'm worried about," he said.

Mr Coyle (29) is a member of the new Fermanagh and Omagh council and Mr Attwood actually worked on his campaign.

Mr Attwood declined to apologise for the slip-up when contacted by this newspaper.

"Sometimes you have a momentary oversight - I don't need to apologise," he said.

When asked how he could claim to fully support SDLP candidates when he didn't know who one of them was, Mr Attwood replied: "Sometimes things happen like that.

"It's John Coyle. In fact I canvassed for him last year."
