Sean Farren pays tribute to friend John Hume with new book on his life
A new book about John Hume, compiled from a collection of his speeches and interviews, was launched by SDLP leader Colum Eastwood in Londonderry last night.
Entitled John Hume - In His Own Words the book, written by Sean Farren, Mr Hume's close friend and colleague, documents the formation of the Civil Rights Movement in Derry and Mr Hume's political career.
Mr Eastwood said the content of the book is especially relevant at this time of "political instability".
"It is a timely reminder of the fragility of our process that should serve as intervention for all of us to reaffirm our commitment to partnership, power-sharing and progress."
It is the second book Sean Farren has penned on John Hume, coming after John Hume: Irish Peacemaker, which he wrote with Denis Haughey in 2015.
Explaining the content of this latest volume on his friend, Mr Farren said: "The book is a tribute to his work and to the man that John is. His compassion, determination and implacable talent transformed these islands in a way that no other single individual did.
"John brought peace to these islands, but he also gave us a way forward. The book will be of interest to anyone who ponders the past but also to those who seek to carve a way forward for a new future."
