Security alert at Alliance Party office

By Claire Williamson

A security alert was sparked at the east Belfast Alliance Party offices after the discovery of a suspect package outside the building.

Army bomb experts were sent to the scene after a telephone warning was received by a local television news station just after 9.30pm last night.

Diversions were in place as the Newtownards Road was closed between North Road and Park Avenue.

A police spokesman said: "Police appreciate the disruption this will cause in the area and thank the local community for their continued patience while we deal with this incident."

The office, in which East Belfast Alliance MP Naomi Long is based, has been attacked a number of times since a vote on the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall in December 2012.

The most recent attack was in April of this year when seven petrol bombs were thrown at the East Belfast office.

An attack on police was also mounted in the area.

The Alliance Party condemned the incident in a statement issued last night.
