Separate bomb alerts in Armagh and Derry wreak havoc

Two separate security alerts in counties Armagh and Londonderry caused a significant amount of disruption over the weekend.

Two suspicious objects were found in Lake Street, Lurgan close to the railway line, affecting train services through the town – bus substitutions had to be provided.

Both objects were later declared elaborate hoaxes by the PSNI.

Meanwhile homes in Derry were evacuated due to separate alerts that also were hoaxes.

A controlled explosion was carried out at Mimosa Court in the city with the second alert in the vicinity of Strabane Old Road.

DUP deputy mayor of Derry Gary Middleton said people were annoyed at being put out of their homes. "We've been told a device has been left at an elderly person's home so the motivation for this is very, very unclear," he said.

Sinn Fein councillor Bridget Meehan added: "Whoever was behind this incident should explain to local residents what they have achieved by forcing families from their homes."
