Sewer project work finished three weeks ahead of schedule

By Brendan McDaid

Northern Ireland Water has completed a major sewer project along a busy Londonderry road ahead of schedule.

The sewer improvement works on Buncrana Road finished last night and brought to an end weeks of frustration for motorists and local businesses.

Calls had been made for rates relief for businesses in the busy Pennyburn area because of traffic being reduced to one lane as a result of the works.

A spokesman for NI Water confirmed yesterday: “NI Water is scheduled to complete essential Sewer Improvement Work on the Buncrana Road this week.

“As a result of this work being completed three weeks ahead of schedule, the Buncrana Road will be open to through traffic in both directions from Friday evening.”

Meanwhile sewer improvement work will continue on adjoining Racecourse Road for three weeks.

The spokesman said: “Approximately £700,000 was invested in this programme of work.

“This work is part of a wider £30m ongoing programme of improvement for the sewerage infrastructure within the city.

“The work will also reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding and will meet the city’s existing and future development needs. NI Water and its contractor Shearwater Consortium would like to thank the public for their understanding and patience while this essential work was completed.”

Public queries can be directed to NI Water’s customer relations centre via Waterline on 08457 440088.
