Sex attack condemned
Detectives are investigating an alleged rape in the University area early on Saturday morning, July 24.
It is believed that a woman was assaulted by two men in an alley between Cromwell Road and Ireton Street between 12.30am and 1.30am.
SDLP MLA Conall McDevitt said it must have been a “harrowing and traumatic experience” for the victim and called on residents to support the police and look out for their neighbours.
“Presently Belfast City Council and the Department of Justice are carrying out an alley gate scheme to improve the safety of alley areas throughout the city and I urge the Executive to properly back this initiative by making it a determined policy so as to reduce the incidence of these attacks.”
Anyone with information can contact detectives in the Rape Crime Unit on 9070 0305 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
