Sex offender guilty of two bomb hoax calls

A convicted sex offender appeared in court yesterday charged with causing two hoax bomb alerts in Londonderry on Tuesday.

William O'Connor (46) pleaded guilty to the two charges which relate to bomb alerts at the city's Foyle Street bus depot and at the Waterside Medical Centre in Spencer Road in the Waterside.

Opposing bail, a police officer told District Judge Barney McElholm that O'Connor was a convicted sex offender who had breached the terms of his Sex Offenders Register conditions.

The officer said that O'Connor made the hoax calls to the police using his own mobile phone.

Refusing bail, the District Judge said hoax alerts diverted police resources. O'Connor, who has been homeless since March, will be sentenced for the offences on June 10.
