Sex offender on the run after failing to return to Magilligan Prison

A sex offender, with a conviction against a child, has been reported as unlawfully at large after failing to report back to Magilligan Prison.

John Patrick Smyth was on home leave and failed to return to the prison on Monday.

The 29-year-old is serving a sentence for gross indecency with or towards a child, rape, aggravated assault armed with an offensive weapon, threats to kill and drug use.

He is described as having a fair complexion is 1.7metres in height with blue eyes and brown hair.

He has a number of scars and tattoos including a "YIRA" slogan on his lower right arm.

Prison Service officials are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Department of Justice said it had nothing to add to the appeal.

Including Smyth, there are currently eight offenders unlawfully at large.

Recently, Joseph Magee was reported as on the run on September 9.

The 28-year-old is serving a sentence for attempted robbery.

Joseph Magee has been missing for a week.
