Shooting in north Belfast: man injured near fast food outlet on Oldpark Road

A man has been injured in a shooting at a fast food outlet on the Oldpark Road in north Belfast.

At around 5.40pm police received reports of a shooting near a Chinese takeaway restaurant on the Oldpark Road.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to a suspected gunshot wound to his head, his condition is described as critical.

A blue Vauxhall Astra estate car was seen making off from the scene, a similar car was found on fire a short time later on nearby Torrens Gardens.

The Oldpark Road has been closed by police and diversions are in place.

There are no further details at present.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness described the shooting as a "savage act of violence".

He said: "I’m sure I speak for the entire north Belfast community when I completely and utterly condemn the savage act of violence. The brutal and public nature of this attempted murder is an indication of the barbaric mentality of the individual who carried it out.

"This kind of criminality has no place in modern society and is completely at odds with the values held by the north Belfast community.

"While I am unaware as to his current condition I can only express by deepest sympathies for the victim’s family who must be greatly distressed at this time."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident on the Oldpark Road or who noticed a blue Astra being driven in the Oldpark area in the time leading up to the shooting or in the time after to contact them at Tennent Street on 101.
