Shoppers warned over fake £50 notes

Retailers and shoppers have been warned to be extra vigilant over reports of counterfeit £50 bank notes in circulation in recent days.

Business people, staff and members of the public in the Moira, Crumlin and Carrickfergus areas are advised to take a few minutes to check notes carefully before accepting them.

A PSNI spokesman said it is a criminal offence to try to pass or keep a banknote that you either know or suspect to be counterfeit.

"If you inadvertently receive a note that you believe to be counterfeit, you should take it to the nearest police station," he added.

The PSNI urged anyone who has any information regarding the production or distribution of counterfeit banknotes to come forward.
