With over 300 people currently waiting for organ donation in Northern Ireland, there was no better place than the thronging Balmoral Show to raise awareness to the shortage of donors in Northern Ireland and increase the donor register.

South Belfast UUP MLA and Health MinisterMichael McGimspey joined the event stand at Belfast King’s Hall to show support.

He said “We all have the opportunity to help others in need simply by joining the Organ Donor Register.

“I would ask everyone in Northern Ireland, who has not already done so, to take this simple step today and to go home tonight and discuss this vital issue with their family and friends.”

Organ donation co-ordinators from all over Northern Ireland, along with professionals from the Public Health Agency (PHA), were available during the show to provide information and answer queries and concerns that visitors to the show had.

Dr Eddie Rooney, Chief Executive, PHA, said: “The stand at the Balmoral Show allowed us to engage with a large and diverse audience, making them aware of the importance of organ donation and encouraging them to register as a donor —today.”

If you missed seeing the stand at the show but would like more information on organ donation you can register as an organ donor, by contact 0300 123 23 23 or visit http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk.
