Singing astronaut Chris touches down in city

By David Young

Spaceman Chris Hadfield was in Belfast yesterday to lend some stellar glamour to the opening night of the 2018 Northern Ireland Science Festival.

The Canadian astronaut (58) was scheduled to give a talk last night at the SSE Arena to more than 2,000 science fans, but found time earlier in the day for a meeting with Lord Mayor Nuala McAllister and STEM students at Belfast City Hall.

Commander Hadfield shot to fame in 2012 when during a five-month stay on the International Space Station he became something of an extra-planetary media star.

On his last day on the International Space Station he posted a farewell music video online - his own version of David Bowie's Space Oddity. It went viral, garnering millions of views quickly. He also posted several images of Ireland from space.
