Sinn Fein have called for the Irish government to boycott the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest because it is taking place in Israel.

South Down MLA Sinead Ennis MLA said the boycott would be an opportunity to shine the spotlight on "the slaughter" of the Palestinians.

However DUP MP Sammy Wilson said that Sinn Fein would be better suited to turning their attentions to their triple boycott of the Executive, the Assembly and Westminster.

The East Antrim MP said it was "making your mind up time" for Sinn Fein - a reference to the United Kingdom's 1981 Eurovision winner by Buck's Fizz - and warned that if they did not end their boycott soon "decisions will be taken elsewhere".

Israel will play host to the 2019 contest after winning the 2018 event in Lisbon.

Mrs Ennis said that the event should not be taking place in Israel due to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

“In recent years, increasing numbers of major sporting, cultural and music figures have joined calls  from the internal Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, not to perform in Israel," she said.

“As someone who has a great love of the competition, I am disappointed. The arts, music and indeed sport have a key role to play in sending a strong message internationally in rejection of the brutality carried out against Palestinians by Israeli state forces.

“The Irish government have an opportunity shine the light on the murder of Palestinians by boycotting the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Israel.”
