Sinn Fein critical of massive search operation in Strabane

A series of house searches related to dissident republican activity have been carried out by the PSNI in Strabane, Co Tyrone.

Several parts of the town were targeted by police on Wednesday, with dozens of officers, Land Rovers and the bomb disposal unit deployed. As a result, several mobile phones and computers were removed.

Councillor Jay McCauley was among several members of Sinn Fein who observed the searches.

He said some of the police actions were of concern.

“I was at three different locations where houses were being searched and the aggressive nature of some of the officers was uncalled for,” he said.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Detectives from Serious Crime Branch conducted a number of searches in the Strabane area as part of an investigation into dissident republican activity. A number of items have been removed for further examination.

“Anyone who has a complaint regarding police activity or behaviour should contact the Police Ombudsman's Office.”
