Sinn Fein MLA's £16,000 ink cartridge bill

Sinn Fein MLA Pat Doherty has run up a huge tab to fund his printing needs - a bill for taxpayers of over £16,000 for printer cartridges over the past two and a half years.

The West Tyrone member bought 185 cartridges over the period, with the bill for one year - for 93 top of the range cartridges - costing a whopping £11,726, a total which his party has admitted needs to be reduced.

A league table on the use of printer toner compiled by the Irish News has named the top 20 ink users, with Sinn Fein members filling nine of the 20 spots. First minister Peter Robinson comes in at 13th place, though his deputy Martin McGuinness doesn’t appear in the list.

In total, Assembly members have gone through nearly £250,000 worth of expensive printer toner in under three years, with Sinn Fein topping the party groups, while the SDLP next highest - but with fewer representatives. Independent member David McClarty has called for an inquiry into toner usage.
