The Assembly's first republican Speaker has formally congratulated the Queen on becoming the longest serving monarch.

Mitchel McLaughlin of Sinn Fein said he had written to the Queen to mark her "milestone achievement".

As both unionist and nationalist MPs united to pay tribute ahead of tomorrow's landmark date, Mr McLaughlin said: "This is an opportune time to inform the House that I wrote on behalf of the Assembly last week to congratulate the Queen ahead of the milestone achievement of becoming the longest-serving monarch."

NI21 leader Basil McCrea said it was "really good" that the Speaker had written the letter and on behalf of the "complete" Assembly, including Sinn Fein.

TUV leader Jim Allister said the scale of the achievement of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was illustrated by the fact that relatively few MLAs were even born when she succeeded to the throne.
