Sinn Fein's Mairtin O Muilleoir sets sights on SDLP's Belfast seat
Former Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Belfast Mairtin O Muilleoir has been unveiled as a new MLA in South Belfast, where he will also attempt to wrestle MP Alasdair McDonnell's Westminster seat from the SDLP leader.
In a Sinn Fein shake-up, O Muilleoir was co-opted into the Assembly to replace Alex Maskey, who is moving to the West Belfast constituency to replace Sue Ramsey as an MLA.
Speaking after a Sinn Fein selection convention in west Belfast, Mr O Muilleoir said: "It is a privilege to serve Sinn Fein and a great honour to be chosen to represent the people of South Belfast. In this new role I will work to build a better Belfast and will campaign vigorously to become the new MP for the south of the city."
The introduction of media-savvy O Muilleoir - a prolific taker of 'selfies' during his year as mayor and also a keen Twitter user where he has 17,000 followers - is sure to worry the SDLP.
And if the nationalist vote is split in the Westminster election this time round it could mean a unionist takes the seat, especially if they field an agreed candidate.
