Six taken to hospital after road crash on the Glenshane Road in Derry

An elderly woman driver had to be cut free from her vehicle when she became trapped after a crash at around 8.30pm last night.

A family of five in another car involved in the incident on the Glenshane Road in Londonderry managed to free themselves.

The road was closed in both directions after the accident at the bottom of the Belfray Country Inn entrance.

All of the casualties were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.

One of the young females involved, reportedly a teenager, is believed to have suffered a serious abdominal injury.

District Commander of the Derry Fire and Rescue Service Barry McDowell said: "It was quite clearly a bad collision with a big impact. Debris was across the road."

The elderly crash victim was described as "not being at all well" by the rescue crew last night.

The five other casualties were described as being in a stable condition.
