Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid hands pals roles at his wedding with Courteney Cox, but who'll be best man?

By Claire Williamson

It's the mystery of the best man – the renowned alternative musician versus the world famous pop star.

Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid is said to be struggling to choose between two of his closest friends to decide who will do the honours at his wedding with Courteney Cox.

The Londonderry musician has already decided that singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and Bangor musician Foy Vance will be involved – he just hasn't decided who will be best man.

English singer Sheeran shared an apartment with 38-year-old McDaid when they lived in Los Angeles.

And in 2013 he introduced McDaid to Courteney, who is a household name around the world for her role as Monica in US sitcom Friends.

Sheeran is reported to have immediately said yes when he was asked to take on the role of usher, but is also thought to be in the running for the job of best man.

McDaid's other best friend, Bangor performer Vance, will also be part of the bridal party as either best man or usher.

The wedding, which is expected to take place later this year, is set to be a star-studded affair somewhere in Ireland, but the venue is yet to be disclosed.

Recently the couple took a trip to Derry, where they were spotted picking out rings and looking at wedding venues.

A friend told a newspaper: "Ed said yes immediately when asked. It's between Foy Vance and Ed for best man – they'll probably share it."

The friend also told The Sun: "Courteney has never been happier. And even though it's her second marriage, she would like people important to her to be there."

Courteney (50) was married to actor David Arquette from 1999 to 2013.

McDaid proposed to her in June after six months of dating.

Ed confirmed he had played matchmaker to the pair late last year, admitting he was thrilled to see them getting on so well.

"I wasn't allowed to talk about this, actually, but it's just gone public. My housemate, who I've lived with for a year, I introduced him to Courteney Cox," he said.

"They started dating and are crazy about each other and I ended up spending a lot of time living in her beach house and therefore bumping into all these random people."
