'Soldier sex attack caught on CCTV'

By Alan Erwin

A soldier subjected a woman to a sex attack in a Belfast city centre doorway lasting more than 17 minutes, the High Court has been told.

Ryan Fairlamb (21) was captured on CCTV footage forcing her to the ground as she tried to fight him off, prosecutors claimed.

A judge was told her ordeal only stopped when two men appeared on the scene, near Custom House Square.

Fairlamb, with an address at Ballykinler Army Camp in Co Down, faces charges of rape, attempted rape, common assault and two counts of sexual assault in the early hours of May 31.

The victim was discovered in a doorway of apartments at Ulster Street, the court heard.

A prosecuting barrister revealed: "CCTV covering the relevant doorway was seized and covered the entire prolonged attack, which lasted in excess of 17 minutes."

A captain in charge of the accused told the judge he would have no authority to hold Fairlamb if he decided to leave an Army camp. Mr Justice Weir ruled that the accused should be granted bail to stay with his parents on condition that they lodge £4,000 in cash sureties.
