Son arrested over mother's death

A man is being questioned over the murder of his mother and the attempted murder of his brother.

The woman, 52, died and her son, 31, was injured when they were stabbed in Connor, near Kells, on Sunday.

Her son, 33, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Police were called to the house at Rossburn Manor in the town at about 12.30pm on Sunday.

SDLP representative Declan O'Loan said: "This is a shocking family tragedy ending in the death of the mother.

The local community is shocked at such an occurrence.

"I want to extend my sympathy to the whole family involved."

Democratic Unionist representative Mervyn Storey said: "It is a terrible tragedy for any person to be murdered. But for a mother to be murdered on Mother's Day is truly awful.

"A day that should have been about celebrating all that is precious and special about parenthood has turned into a nightmare.

"This incident will send shockwaves through the community and further afield."
