South Belfast bomb scare declared a hoax

A bomb scare in the Lower Windsor area of south Belfast has been declared a hoax.

The alert on Saturday night required residents to be evacuated from their homes while the PSNI's ammunition technical officers - who are responsible for bomb disposal - dealt with the incident.

People who had to leave their homes were brought to the Olympia Leisure Centre.

Locals were allowed to return home once the device found was examined and was determined to be a hoax.

Streets around Great Northern Street and Northbrook Street were cordoned off for a period of time by the PSNI.

Temporary Chief Superintendent Simon Walls said: "I want to thank residents for their patience while we worked to keep the community safe.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with information which could assist with out enquiries to call us on 101, quoting reference number 1213 of 18/08/2018."

Alternatively the public can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
