Special needs art group in UK award votes plea

By Donna Deeney

An arts group for adults with special needs is in line for an award from the Big Lottery but is dependent on the support of local people to vote for them.

Something Special is the sole organisation in Northern Ireland that has made it into the Arts Award Category.

Based in Eglinton, the group was established five years ago to provide an alternative approach

to day opportunities for young adults with learning difficulties.

Staff member Jennie Bell said being shortlisted for the award is an endorsement of the hard work, energy and enthusiasm of the members.

She explained: “We had to submit a progress report of the projects we have been involved in which clearly impressed the judges who short listed Something Special to the final 10 throughout the UK but now we need the help of the public to take us that step further.

“Voting ends this Sunday, so I would encourage people to either log on to the website or call the number. If we make it to the final three we will attend the awards ceremony which will be broadcast live by the BBC from London and if we win we will get £2,000.”
