Special needs theatre company heads to Poland

By Brendan McDaid

Northern Ireland’s first theatre company for adults with disabilities is to perform in Europe today as part of a continental exchange.

Actors and production staff from Lilliput Theatre Company are making their way to Poland for a series of workshops and concerts.

Lilliput was set up 20 years ago and is resident at The Playhouse in Derry, offering a creative outlet for people with physical or mental special needs.

While based in Gdansk, members will participate in drumming workshops, take a trip to a theatre festival and in a showcase concert.

Lilliput has joined forces with Germany’s Internationaler Bund and The Polish Association for People with Intellectual Disabilities for the groundbreaking project. Max Beer, marketing officer at The Playhouse, said: “(The three charities) are all so dedicated to working towards equal opportunities for people with learning difficulties, and have learned a lot from each other.”
