Stabbing accused battles in court as he is denied bail

By Eamonn MacDermott

A man accused of stabbing another man with a broken bottle tried to throw a chair across a courtroom after he was refused bail.

Marc Villa (21) of John Street in Londonderry was accused of wounding a man with intent to do him grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon - a broken bottle - in the Strand Road area of the city on June 22.

As he was remanded into custody, Villa - who has 48 previous convictions - attempted to throw a chair across the court and struggled violently with custody and security staff. He also shouted threats against the police officer, stating he would "get him".

Villa had to be restrained by five security staff before being led away.

Deputy District Judge Joe Rice said that the outburst and the threat against the police officer should be recorded for any future bail application. Villa will appear again on July 16.
