Statement was forged by officer, court told

By Mick Browne

A serving PSNI officer forged part of a statement in which a Newtownabbey mother alleged that her four-year-old son had been assaulted by a neighbour, a jury has been told.

At the opening of the trial of Constable Barbara Scott, a Belfast Crown Court jury heard that the alleged additions meant no prosecution was ever carried out.

Scott, whose address was given as c/o Castlereagh PSNI station, denies misconduct in public office.

The jury heard that after the alleged assault in 2007, Scott took a statement from the boy's mother.

After months passed without any prosecution, the mother contacted the Public Prosecution Service – but it had no records of the file.

The mother then contacted the Police Ombudsman and as a result a police inspector showed the woman her original statement.

The court heard that the last three lines described how the mother only wanted the neighbour to be spoken to and not prosecuted. But the mother "vehemently denied" that this had been her attitude.

The trial continues.
