Strabane thug bit off part of man's ear during street attack

By Conor Sharkey

A Strabane man has had part of an ear bitten off in a brutal assault.

Luke Beattie was jumped by two men in Abercorn Square at around 2am on Christmas Eve. The 23-year-old also suffered a bite mark to his back and an injury to his arm.

The severed piece of ear was not recovered, leaving Mr Beattie facing reconstructive surgery.

A PSNI investigation has been launched and CCTV is being examined in a bid to trace the two men responsible.

Mr Beattie told the Strabane Chronicle he had no idea why he was targeted, but said he believed it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

"It was a blur at first, but the bite to my ear focused me because it was so sharp. You can see me feeling my head but I didn't realise the extent of what happened until afterwards," he said.

Mr Beattie said that one possible explanation for the incident was the jumper he was wearing.

It was Christmas Jumper Party Night in Ruby's Nightclub, with hundreds of people wearing the same, or similar, clothing.
