Stran girls take top honours

by Chris McCann

The Stranmillis Ladies’ Soccer team were crowned Dale Farm Jordanstown Champions 2010 with a victory over Queen’s in the final.

The ladies started off steadily in the competition, which was played over one day on Wednesday, November 17, at Jordanstown. They won their first game 4-1 against Belfast Metropolitan College.

The Stran girls’ delight was short-lived, however, as they were to play Queen’s B team in the second round. In this thrilling game, despite hitting the woodwork twice, the Stran Ladies lost 3-2. However, they re-grouped well and won the next three games comfortably, leaving them joint top of the group along with Queen’s B.

In the semi-finals they faced a well-drilled Coleraine team. After only four minutes Coleraine led 2-0, but the Stranmillis Ladies fought hard, with Rachel Kerr and Naomi Thompson scoring two excellent goals.

With just two minutes to go Melissa Orr scored in the top corner to book her team’s place in the final where they would again meet the winners of the other semi-final, Queen’s A.

In the final Stranmillis had a dream start; three minutes into the game, Melissa Orr scored with a great shot to put them in the lead. The Stranmillis girls were now fighting hard to contain Queen’s, with Louise Noble, Tanya McCoy and Naomi Thompson defending bravely.

However, Queen’s managed to squeeze past the defence with three minutes to go and scored in bottom corner.

It was a hard-fought battle with both teams hitting the woodwork, and with two minutes to go it looked like the match was going to penalties.

But the Stranmillis girls kept fighting and the breakthrough came with Rachel Kerr scoring from a distance to clinch the game and the trophy.

Stranmillis Ladies lifted the cup and were named the Dale Farm champions of 2010.
