Stranmillis cannabis factory is shut down

Police have shut down a cannabis factory in south Belfast.

The factory, which was discovered in a house in St Albans Gardens in Stranmillis on Tuesday, contained cannabis plants with a potential street value of approximately £117,000.

Detective Inspector Peter Mullan said it appeared that someone was staying in the property and tending to the plants.

He added: "Drugs are an issue of concern to local communities and officers have been working with residents to tackle the issue of drug supply and distribution.

"This is a significant seizure. Where properties are being used to grow cannabis plants, often the electricity supply has been tampered with and this presents a risk to adjacent properties.

"We encourage landlords and property owners to make regular checks of their property."
