Street thug hits van with hammer in hijacking bid

By Staff Reporter

A man armed with a hammer hit a van after the driver refused to stop in what appears to be a failed hijacking.

It happened in the Divis area of west Belfast, which has been plagued by a group of so-called joyriders and car thieves known as the Divis Hoods.

Police said the delivery driver was travelling along Albert Street shortly after 9.30pm on Friday when a male armed with a hammer stepped into the road in an apparent attempt to force the vehicle to stop.

The driver avoided him and, as he drove around him, the male struck the side of the van with the hammer.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Melanie McGrory said: "We are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone who was in the Albert Street area at around the time this incident took place.

"Detectives can be contacted at the offices of Belfast Reactive and Organised Crime in Musgrave Police station by calling 101."
