Strict bail for teen over retrial for axe murder

A teenager set to face a retrial for the axe murder of another Traveller has been confined to less than half of Northern Ireland.

Martin Stokes was banned from leaving Counties Londonderry and Tyrone as part of tight conditions under which he was granted bail.

The 18-year-old must also come up with cash sureties of £10,000 in total before being released until he goes on trial again for the killing of John Mongan (pictured).

Mr Mongan (30) was attacked with hatchets and other bladed weapons after intruders broke into his home at Fallswater Street, west Belfast, in February 2008.

The father-of-three was killed in front of his heavily pregnant wife Julia, suffering up to 50 wounds, some possibly inflicted by a sword or machete.

Martin Stokes, who was just 15 at the time of the murder, was handed a minimum 16-year term.
