Student Rakia gets a kick out of studies and sport

By Rebecca Black

It's not every student who manages to compete on the world stage in a sport while completing their studies.

International taekwondo champion Rakia Alouane graduated from the Ulster University yesterday with a BSc Hons in health physiology, and has already started preparing for the 2018 European Championships in Estonia.

The Bangor woman has competed in three European competitions since 2015.

"During my studies, the main issue I faced was balancing competitions with tests, which meant I had a hard training schedule to keep up with," she said.

"I was lucky to have a supportive network through my lecturers and course director, who were very understanding. Having such a tight schedule motivated me to work harder, and I'm delighted to be graduating."

Course director Jacqui Crawford added: "Rakia's sporting success has been a major achievement for her on top of her studies.

"Rakia was a committed student with a determination that can only be of benefit in her future career."
