A sunken ship leaking gallons of fuel in Portaferry could cause significant environmental damage to Strangford Lough, it has been claimed.

The tanks on the stricken vessel, which is understood to have been abandoned some time ago, are believed to contain 1,000 litres of diesel.

Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong called for immediate action to clean up the spill.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs confirmed that a water quality inspector attended the scene yesterday morning.

It added: "The situation will be kept under review to determine if any remedial measures are necessary or practicable, given the strong currents in the vicinity of Cook Street."
