Support for Swifts FC club gutted by arsonists

By Staff Reporter

A football team whose clubhouse was wrecked by arsonists on Boxing Day say they have been overwhelmed by messages of support.

Fire broke out at Sport and Leisure Swifts FC's Glen Road premises in west Belfast, causing major damage.

Club officials held a meeting at the weekend, which they described as positive, to discuss the way forward.

And they said they had been "overwhelmed with the messages of support and the offers of help".

"Thank you to all. It is helping to raise our spirits," they added.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Melanie McGrory said: "We are working to establish exactly how the fire started but believe it to be deliberate at this stage."

The Swifts play in Football League Championship Two, where they lie in third place and have a chance of promotion.

They nearly reached the Steel & Sons Cup final, only losing out at the semi-final stage.

Police can be contacted at Woodbourne Station on 101.
