Suspect object in Co Antrim alert declared hoax

Homes were evacuated in Co Antrim following the discovery of a suspect object.

Police were in attendance at a security alert in the Main Street area of Cushendun following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area.

It was later declared a hoax.

SDLP councillor Margaret Anne McKillop said: "Every home on Main Street in Cushendun had to be evacuated today following this security alert. It is a total disgrace and those behind have no support in the community.

"It is a very busy time of year for Cushendun and we are working hard to bring people into the area – not push them out. Today’s action was exactly what we neither need nor want.

"I urge anyone with information about this to contact the police."

Elsewhere, homes were evacuated for a time amid a security alert in Carrickfergus. It was later declared a hoax.

East Antrim Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson condemned those behind the two alerts.

"The people behind these alerts are sick individuals, with no respect for the lives of others. To leave a device which had the potential to explode in a residential area is a callous move.

"The only thing it is achieving is disrupting the lives of the vast majority of people in the local community.

"The public does not support these incidents and wants them to stop. I would urge anyone with information to contact the police immediately."
