Suspended sentence for £22k benefit fraud Newry man

A man was convicted at Newry Crown Court yesterday for claiming £22,019 benefits he was not entitled to.

Seamus Nelson (59) of St Josephs Cottages, Ballymartin claimed Housing Benefit totalling £22,019 while failing to declare capital.

He was given a 10 month prison sentence suspended for two years.

The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
