Police said a suspicious object was taken away for examination following a security alert in Coleraine overnight.

A number of residents on Drumtarsey Road were evacuated and the road closed for a time while army technical officers dealt with the object.

As of 5am all residents were returned to their homes and the object was taken away for further examination.

The road has since reopened.

Sinn Fein MLA Caoimhe Archibald condemned those behind a security alert.

“The security alert in the Heights area which saw an object taken away for examination caused significant disruption.

"I attended the scene and spoke to residents and the police in relation to the inconvenience caused to local residents with some homes having to be evacuated and the street closed.

"The nearby St John’s Primary School was opened for people who were evacuated.

“Those responsible for this disruption have shown complete disregard for the community and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the police."
