Swimmers make a splash in the name of charity

Northern Ireland may have had its mildest Christmas on record, but a bracing Boxing Day dip in the sea is not something most revellers would do to celebrate.

Broadcaster Pamela Ballantine and Assembly Member Mike Nesbitt were among the crowds of swimmers taking part in the SPARKS NI annual swim challenge at Ballyholme Yacht Club in Co Down.

Temperatures hit 13 degrees on land as the swimmers prepared for some fun. Finuola Kerr and Katie and Anna Woolsey from Bangor plucked up the courage to brave the waves, and judging by their smiles it was worth it.

All of the money raised enables Action Medical Research to fund projects to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability.

It is currently researching the development of ultrasound scanning and computing techniques to prevent stillbirth and treatments for retinopathy of prematurity, which causes childhood blindness.
