Taxi driver punched in Newtownabbey hijack bid

By David Young

Police are hunting two men after an attempted taxi hijacking in Newtownabbey.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning when a driver stopped in Moreland Avenue to ask two men whether they had called for a taxi.

While the taxi driver was talking to them, one came around to the driver's side and tried to open the locked door.

The second man then demanded the keys to the vehicle and money, and punched the taxi driver several times in the head.

He tried to pull the driver out of the taxi, but the driver managed to escape.

The men are described as 5ft 10ins tall, 20-25 years old, and both spoke with strong Belfast accents.

One was of medium build, had a ginger beard and was wearing a royal blue hoodie with the hood up.

The other was of large build, had short, dark hair and was wearing a dark hoodie with the hood down.

Detectives in Newtownabbey have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
