TD's concern for men who 'tried to kill PSNI officer'

By Ruaidhri Giblin

a member of the Irish parliament has submitted a legal affidavit regarding concerns for the human rights of two men wanted for an alleged attempt to murder a PSNI officer.

Kieran Maguire (29) and Sean Paul Farrell (32) from Dublin are suspected of attempted murder and possession of explosives.

Both men face life imprisonment if found guilty.

A European Arrest Warrant was issued in March after a bomb was found under the car of a serving PSNI officer in Co Londonderry on June 18, 2015.

Dublin's High Court heard that Independent TD for Dublin North, Clare Daly, has submitted an affidavit on Mr Farrell's behalf in relation to human rights concerns about Maghaberry Prison.

Barrister James McCullough, for Mr Farrell, said "very serious matters" had been raised by Ms Daly. Mr McCullough asked the High Court to "stay its hand" and not fix a date for the hearing of the extradition application because Ms Daly was to visit Maghaberry Prison again on July 10.

The extradition hearing will continue in July.
