Teacher charged with child rape
A school teacher is to stand trial at the Crown Court in Londonderry charged with raping a child.
Stewart Robert Smith pleaded not guilty yesterday to three charges of raping the girl and one charge of indecently assaulting the same child between December 2002 and August 2003.
Judge Piers Grant ordered that the media could not name the school where the defendant (39), from Winchester Park in the Waterside area of the city, taught.
He released the defendant on continuing bail. As part of his bail conditions Smith is banned from having any contact with prosecution witnesses.
The trial is due to start on May 14. A prosecution barrister told Judge Grant that the complainant would not require special measures when giving her evidence.
