A Co Down teenager was remanded into custody on Monday charged with trying to kill two people.

Standing handcuffed in the dock of Newtownards Magistrates Court, Michael Callum Cunningham (19) spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges against him.

Cunningham, from Hunters Walk in Newcastle, is accused of the attempted murders of two men on December 21 and possessing a knife with intent to commit attempted murder.

The charges arise after the two males sustained knife wounds during an incident close to a bar on the Bryansford Road in Newcastle shortly before midnight on Friday.

A detective said she believed she could connect Cunningham to the offences.

As there was no bail application, District Judge Mark Hamill remanded Cunningham into custody to appear via video-link at Downpatrick Magistrates Court on January 3.
