Teen warned of jail term for assault on paramedic
A 15-year-old boy who admitted assaulting an ambulance paramedic who was trying to treat him for injuries, has been told he will be very lucky to avoid prison.
The remark was made to the youth at Londonderry Magistrates Court during a sitting yesterday by District Judge Barney McElholm, who said that he would be very lucky to escape a prison sentence, despite his age.
The youth admitted assaulting the paramedic last Tuesday night and also admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour in Altnagelvin Hospital's accident and emergency department on the same night.
When he appeared in court in custody, his solicitor told the judge that the youth was extremely remorseful for the way he had treated the paramedic and for his behaviour in the hospital. Mr McElholm replied "and so he should be".
The youth, who is of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at the Juvenile Court next Tuesday.
