A pensioner is recovering after being struck on the back of the head by a group of teenagers in Co Tyrone.

The man, aged in his late 60s, was assaulted by three young males as he walked along the Melvin Road area of Strabane at around 4.30pm on Thursday.

He was approached from behind near the Melvin Sports Complex and hit on the back of the head by one of the males, who also grabbed his cap.

It is understood to be the second assault on an elderly man in the town in as many weeks.

SDLP Strabane councillor Jason Barr has branded those responsible "absolutely disgusting".

He said elderly people should not be "living in fear" following a spate of anti-social behaviour incidents in the town recently.

He added: "Unfortunately it seems to be a small number of young people who are bringing Strabane down and at the end of the day it's members of their own community that they are targeting.

"It's not reflective of all the young people who live in the town, but just a small percentage causing the problems."

Police have described the attack as "a terrible incident".

A PSNI spokesman urged anyone with relevant information to contact police in Strabane on 101, quoting reference number 1470 of July 25.
