Teenage driver treated after being cut from car

By Clare Weir

A teenager was today being treated in hospital after being cut free from the wreckage of a car following an early morning crash in Londonderry.

Four fire crews attended the scene and used hydraulic equipment to free the young man after the incident that happened just off the junction of Culmore Road and Colby Avenue.

Details of the incident, that occurred around 5am, were sketchy and police would only say that the car left the road.

Fire Service Watch Commander Jonathan Dunn of Crescent Link station said: " Two crews from Crescent Link and two crews from Northland Road attended and discovered a Vauxhall Vectra had left the Culmore Road close to the junction with Colby Avenue.

"There was one male occupant, the driver, thought to be around 19 years old. We worked in tandem with our colleagues in the Ambulance Service, who we must commend. "The driver was trapped and had to be extricated with hydraulic cutting equipment. He was then removed to Altnagelvin Hospital."

He said the cause of the accident was under investigation.
