Teenager convicted of raping young boy

By Paul Higgins

A teenage schoolboy has been convicted of raping and sexually abusing a five-year-old boy.

The 14-year-old, who like his victim cannot be identified, was unanimously convicted of raping the boy by the Belfast Crown Court jury who also convicted him, by a majority verdict, of one count of sexually assaulting the boy.

After more than two hours of deliberations the jury acquitted the teen of three further charges of rape and sexual assault.

During the week-long hearing they heard the victim, who said he was between three-and-a-half and four-and-a-half years old, testify on videolink that his “big cousin”, although they are not related, would put his “wee wee” in his bottom.

In giving evidence on his own behalf, the 14-year-old claimed nothing had happened.

Following the convictions, Judge Tom Burgess released the teen on bail and listed the case for mention on Friday week to ascertain the best way forward to deal with it.
