Teenager to stand trial over one-punch killing at Omagh bar

By Adrian Rutherford

A Co Tyrone teenager is to stand trial for the manslaughter of a man who died following a one-punch assault during an altercation outside an Omagh bar.

Christopher McClean is accused of unlawfully killing Darren McBrearty last year.

The 28-year-old was attacked outside licensed premises in the Co Tyrone town's John Street on August 4, 2013.

Mr McBrearty was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital after the incident, where he was placed on life-support, but died two days later.

During a preliminary hearing at Dungannon Magistrates Court yesterday, a prosecution lawyer said there was a case to answer, which was conceded by the defence.

McClean, of Main Street, Gortin, spoke only to confirm his identity and that he understood the charge.

Deputy District Judge Amanda Brady remanded McClean on continuing bail of £300 and with a £500 surety.

The case has been listed for arraignment at Dungannon Crown Court on May 20.
